Dosage

Dicetel® (Eldicet®) is available in two different presentation forms: 50 mg and 100 mg tablet.

Dicetel® is best taken during meals. The tablet(s) must be swallowed whole without crushing or sucking, with an adequate amount of liquid (a glass of water for example). Do not swallow the tablet while lying down or just before retiring to bed.

Dosage :

  • Film-coated tablets (orange) containing 50 mg or 100 mg pinaverium bromide
  • Dosage: 3 – 4 tablets of 50 mg a day. Exceptionally, this dosage can be increased to a total of 6 tablets a day.
    2 ( or 3 ) tablets of 100 mg a day in 2 ( or 3 ) administrations.
  • As preparation for a barium enema: 3 days before examination 2 x 2 50 mg tablets, or 2 x 100 mg tablet.
Indications

Dicetel® is indicated for:

  • the symptomatic treatment of pain, transit disorders and intestinal discomfort related to IBS
  • the symptomatic treatment of pain related to the biliary functional disorders
  • as a preparation for a barium enema
Pharmacology

Dicetel® iis a spasmolytic agent whose effects are exerted on the gastrointestinal tract.

It is a calcium-antagonist which acts by inhibiting the calcium entry at the level of the gastrointestinal smooth muscle cell specifically. It is devoid of anticholinergic effects.

It is also devoid of cardiovascular effects.

Side-effects

Dicetel® has no anticholinergic activity at therapeutic dosages. (anticholinergic side effects include a dry mouth, blurred vision, urine retention, constipation and drowsiness)

Since Dicetel® does not give these side-effects, it is less likely to interfere with a patient’s daily activities. For this reason it can be used in patients with prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention and glaucoma.

Therapeutic dosages of Dicetel® do not affect blood pressure, the ECG (electrocardiogram) or cardiac electrophysiology.

Safety profile

Safety and tolerance data have been collected from clinical trials in which more than 6000 patients received pinaverium bromide.

In all trials pinaverium bromide was well tolerated. The only adverse reactions that were mentioned to Solvay Pharmaceuticals were rare cases of minor digestive disturbances. Isolated cases of cutaneous undesirable effects. For more details see your national product description.
